Wat is positieve psychologie?
De positieve psychologie richt zich op optimaal menselijk functioneren. Ze kijkt naar wanneer mensen op hun best zijn en houdt zich bezig met het vergroten van welzijn op individueel niveau en groepsniveau. De positieve subjectieve ervaring staat centraal: welzijn en tevredenheid evenals een positieve houding ten opzichte van de toekomst (optimisme, hoop en vertrouwen).

Wetenschap en praktijk

De positieve psychologie is boven alles wetenschappelijk. Enerzijds streeft de positieve psychologie naar bewijsvoering, het verrichten van metingen, en het testen van interventies. Anderzijds is de positieve psychologie gericht op de praktijk, waarbij de toepassing van kennis en technieken eveneens een centrale rol vervult. De positieve psychologie biedt concrete middelen die direct ingezet kunnen worden om optimaal functioneren te bevorderen. Het is dan ook niet verwonderlijk dat de technieken en interventies uit de positieve psychologie binnen een grote diversiteit van vakgebieden worden toegepast.

Interventies

Interventies in positieve psychologie
Interventies uit de positieve psychologie zijn voornamelijk gericht zijn op het bevorderen van optimaal functioneren. Hiertoe behoort onder andere het vergroten van acceptatie en aandacht voor het moment, bewust worden van en handelen volgens persoonlijke waarden, en het omgaan met emoties. Een belangrijk gevolg is dat waarde-gestuurd gedrag, autonomie en veerkracht worden vergroot. Wanneer gedrag autonoom is en wordt gestuurd door persoonlijke waarden draagt dit bij aan meer creativiteit (Amabile, 1996) verbeterde prestaties (Grolnick & Ryan, 1987) en meer subjectief welbevinden (Csikszentmihalyi & Rathunde, 1993; Ryan, Deci, & Grolnick, 1995). Meer veerkracht betekent dat men beter en flexibeler kan omgaan met tegenslagen of moeilijke ervaringen en situaties (Reich, Zautra, & Hall, 2010).
